Salinas sells a can-do spirit
The joy of being back in Texas was short lived after a 12 months stint in London, England for a company assignment.
There I was, a "sales manager" enjoying the perks of a corporate six figure salary.
The reward for grinding after five years.
The big problem started
.... after I arrived back to the US and found my previous management position eliminated.
So without warning...
I was back on the sales floor (with a sales quota), assigned to a sales team, and reporting to a sales manager. That meant I had to replace my salaried position – with a commission based salary as a sales rep.
Is this really happening?
I thought I was on the fast track. (WTF?)
Then, as if by chance, something amazing happened.
In 2010, I somehow came across a blog post by Tim Ferriss, author of the Four Hour Work Week...
... titled “How to Make an Extra $100,000 in the Next 6 Months.”
It highlighted a couple, Randy and Nicola Wilburn, running a business from home.
It was a promotional piece for a contest sponsored by Shopify to get people to start an online business.
It instantly became clear that it was possible to make a living online – selling products or services.
So I weighed my options:
Proverbial "sales monkey"? ...or
Online business owner?
Two days later… I quit my job! 🙂
I wholeheartedly believed that if I could learn the skills needed to run a successful online business, then I could make money from anywhere.
That idea alone felt liberating.
My plan was simple.
I would build build websites and get them to the first page of Google using search engine optimization (SEO). A strategy I first heard about up in London.
I would then rent the websites to local business owners for a monthly fee who wanted more leads and sales.
So first, I had to learn to build websites on WordPress.
... and I couldn't stop there.
I bought courses, hired an SEO coach, scoured marketing forums, and locked myself in my home office for weeks at a time...
... tweaking and testing.
After some success, I was ready to get paying clients.
I reached out to local service businesses who were already advertising online.
I showed them websites I built, already ranking on page one for major search terms in their industry.
Because I showed them "results in advance" picking up clients was simple.
Building on that success, I decided to rinse and repeat the "rank and rent" business model.
But I narrowed my focus to lawyers, dentists, and contractors. (They could afford to pay more.)
As of now, I no longer take on local SEO clients.
I've decided to take the knowledge, skills, and lessons learned running my SEO consulting business since 2010 and share them online.
I wanted a platform where I could serve others on a larger scale – not just local clients.
That platform is... Teachmor.com
